SUSTAINABILITY
Introduction & Overview:
Origins Films recognises the importance of contributing to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. Committing to remote working has allowed us to be more agile, cost-effective and sustainable which aligns with our core values as a business. This policy outlines our further commitment to decarbonisation within the creative sector, aiming to minimise our environmental impact and promote responsible practices.
We recognise the significant impact of transport on our carbon footprint so we minimise our transportation-related emissions by:
- Working entirely remotely and therefore reducing our business travel.
- Embracing virtual meetings.
- Encouraging cast and crew to utilise public transportation options whenever possible for their commutes and provide information about local public transportation routes.
- Aiming to limit the number of production vehicles to transport cast & crew between sets and utilise electric vehicles where possible.
- Reducing distances between set locations where possible.
- Minimising travel between sets where possible, favouring single-location shoots are preferable.
We strive to reduce our energy consumption in our operations by implementing energy-efficient technologies and practices by:
- Optimising equipment usage and maintaining well-regulated heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems on our production sites.
- Suitable clothing and layers are encouraged for all shoots whether studio-based or on location.
- Turning everything off at lunchtime/during set breaks and at the end of the day during production.
- Using reusable water bottles on set.
We are committed to minimising our environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable video production industry by:
- Actively promoting recycling on all shoots.
- Reducing plastic use, especially single-use plastics or virgin material.
- Aiming to use reusable props and sets whenever possible to minimise single-use materials.
- Purchasing all props and costumes second-hand online or from charity shops.
- Fostering a culture of responsible waste management by encouraging employees to adopt sustainable practices both at work and in their personal lives.
We are committed to promoting sustainable sourcing, reducing environmental impact, and fostering positive social change:
- Where possible we purchase items locally and from independent suppliers to support local and independent businesses.
- We source actors and freelance crew that are local to the shooting location to minimise travel.
We understand the importance of data sustainability throughout our operations, this includes:
- Only collecting the data necessary for our business operations and purposes which minimises data redundancy and excess.
- We prioritise digital data collection methods to reduce paper usage and promote electronic storage.
- We utilise cloud storage solutions with reputable providers that prioritise sustainable data centres.
- We use iPads on set instead of printing production paperwork, opting for digital scripts, storyboards, and documentation to reduce paper usage.
Our goals to further reduce our carbon footprint in the not-so-distant future:
- We plan to operate a strictly no-paper policy across all of the business dealings by 2026.
- We plan to move to Octopus Energy from British Gas for 100% renewable energy by 2026
- We will purchase coffee keep cups and supply reusable water bottles for the cast/crew on set by 2026
- We plan to offset our remaining carbon emissions by 2026.
- We hope to have an electric van by 2030.
- We’re aware of brilliant brands such as Ecologi and Ecosia, whose tree-planting programmes focus on Reforestation and plan to partner with them in the near future.
- Other initiatives such as ALBERT and ADGREEN are also on our radar to better our understanding of how we can be more sustainable as a company.
